    7 Series.
    BMW's flagship saloon.

The 7 Series is BMW's top saloon, launched in 1977 as the brand's technology flagship. The E38, E65, F01, G11 and G70 generations each introduced features that later trickled down to cheaper models. The range covers inline-sixes, V8s and V12s in the topmost trims. Drive is to the rear axle or via xDrive, and the cabin prioritises rear-seat comfort. The 7 Series often appears at Japanese auctions in very high specification.

    Which generation to choose?

    E38 (1994–2001)

Prized for its classic, balanced shape and dependable engines. The 750i V12 is now sought after as the start of the modern flagship era.

    E65 (2001–2008)

Avant-garde styling and the iDrive system that defined later BMW controls. The top 760i carries a V12, while the V8 range delivers strong performance.

    F01 (2008–2015)

A return to restrained design, with turbocharged engines and hybrid variants. The strongest versions are the 760i with its V12.

    G11 and G70 (2015 onward)

The latest generations with rich electronics, hybrid variants and the fully electric i7 within the G70 range. Comfort and equipment at a reference level.
