BMW Z4 · E85, E89, G29 · Buying guide

    Z4.
    The rear-drive roadster.

The Z4 is BMW's two-seat roadster, successor to the Z3, in production since 2002. The first-generation E85 is a classic soft-top roadster, the E89 introduced a folding hardtop, and the latest G29 returned to a fabric roof. Inline-sixes are the most common engines, with drive going to the rear axle. The G29 shares its platform with the Toyota GR Supra A90, both built at the same Magna Steyr plant in Graz. The Z4 surfaces regularly at Japanese auctions.

    Which generation to choose?

    E85 and E86 (2002–2008)

The first generation: the E85 soft-top roadster and the E86 coupe. The flagship Z4 M runs the naturally aspirated S54 inline-six — the same engine as the E46 M3 — with a manual gearbox.

    E89 (2009–2016)

The second generation with a folding hardtop, blending roadster and coupe traits. The strong sDrive35is uses a turbocharged inline engine.

    G29 (2018 onward)

The latest generation, a return to a fabric roof, sharing its platform with the Toyota GR Supra A90. The top M40i runs the turbocharged B58 inline-six with very composed handling.
