BMW 8 Series · E31, G15 · Buying guide

    8 Series.
    BMW's grand coupe.

The 8 Series is BMW's flagship coupe, blending saloon luxury with a grand-touring silhouette. The first-generation E31, built 1989 to 1999, became famous for its pop-up headlights and the V12 in the 850i. The modern generation from 2018, based on the G14, G15 and G16 codes, returns with coupe, convertible and four-door Gran Coupe body styles. At the top sits the M8 with a turbocharged V8 and xDrive. The 8 Series appears at Japanese auctions both as the classic E31 and as the modern grand coupe.

    E31 (1989–1999)

The classic grand coupe with pop-up headlights. The 850i runs a V12, while the sought-after 840Ci uses a V8. Good cars are collector items today.

    G15 coupe (2018 onward)

A modern two-door coupe with turbocharged inline and V8 engines. The 840i and M850i xDrive blend comfort with strong performance.

G14 convertible and G16 Gran Coupe (2019 onward)

An open coupe and a four-door Gran Coupe extend the range with extra practicality while keeping the grand-coupe silhouette.

    M8 (2019 onward)

The flagship with the turbocharged S63 V8 and xDrive, offered as coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe. The most powerful and priciest version in the range.
