Audi R8 · Type 42 & Type 4S · 2006–2024 · Buying guide

    Audi R8.
A naturally aspirated V10 with Lamborghini genes.

The R8 is Audi's first production mid-engined supercar, built from 2006 to 2024 across two generations. The first generation (Type 42, 2006–2015) launched with the 420 hp V8 4.2 FSI and from 2009 also offered the V10 5.2 FSI shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo. The second generation (Type 4S, 2015–2024) was V10-only, using the same block as the Lamborghini Huracan. The R8 is one of the last production supercars with a naturally aspirated V10; its successor will be fully electric.

    Which version to choose?

    Type 42 V8 4.2 FSI (2006–2015)

The first generation with the 420 hp V8 4.2 FSI, offered with the open-gate manual and the R tronic automated gearbox. The naturally aspirated V8 and quattro drive make it the most analogue and accessible R8.

    Type 42 V10 5.2 FSI (2009–2015)

The stronger first-generation variant. The V10 5.2 FSI shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo, initially 525 hp, later a higher-output V10 plus. The first ten-cylinder R8.

    Type 4S V10 (2015–2024)

The second generation, V10-only, sharing the 5.2 FSI with the Lamborghini Huracan, paired with the S tronic dual-clutch and quattro. The V10 performance reaches around 620 hp.

    Type 4S RWD & Spyder

The later rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant for a more involving character, and the open-top Spyder. The final 2024 cars are the last naturally aspirated R8s.
